Fisherman dies when 2 boats collide near Chicago

According to authorities a fisherman died after another boat rear-ended his boat Sunday shortly after midnight, throwing him into the Cal-Sag Channel in the south suburbs.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Nathaniel Parks stated that the accident occurred when the second boat swerved to avoid a log and hit the fishing boat, which was moving.  The man in the fishing boat was thrown into the water and could not swim.  He was not wearing a life jacket.

According to state officials at least one boat was conducting maintenance tests at the time of the collision.

The victim has been identified as a 41-year-old man from Orland Park according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The victim’s name has not been released yet and is pending identification of family members.

The body was found using helicopters with an infrared camera in addition to divers with sonar.  The fire departments helping to find the body were from Chicago, Alsip, Palos Heights, and Blue Island.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is investigating the collision and will determine whether any of the boaters will be cited.

Intern for Governor Perdue dies in car accident

The intern for Governor Sonny Perdue was killed in a car accident this weekend in Atlanta when a woman with a .229 blood-alcohol level slammed into his car.  The intern was a 2008 University of Georgia graduate.

The victim was 24-year-old Jordan Griner.  He was the designated driver early Saturday when he was hit by a car driven by 26-year-old Christa Scott.  Scott ran a red light and hit the driver’s door of Griner’s car, according to reports.  Scott is being held in the Fulton County jail on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless driving.

According to reports the accident occurred a little after 4 a.m.  Griner, from Augusta, had just dropped of friends and was heading home when the accident occurred.

Griner’s funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home in Augusta.

Tour bus accident in Rosemead

23 people were injured on Thursday, June 17, 2010 in a three-vehicle collision in Rosemead.  Of the 23, two were critically injured.  The accident occurred at 10 a.m. in the 3000 block of North San Gabriel Boulevard.

According to officials a silver Honda Civic was headed southbound on San Gabriel Boulevard near Garvey avenue, when it crashed into the rear end of a white Nissan Sentra.  The Nissan Sentra was pushed into oncoming traffic where it collided head-on with a tour bus.

Both the driver of the tour bus and the driver of the Nissan were rushed to a trauma center in critical condition.  According to reports the driver of the bus suffered two broken legs and the driver of the Nissan suffered one broken leg.  One other person was also rushed to the trauma center as well.

Seven other people were taken to a nearby hospital and reportedly sustained minor injuries.  The remaining 13 other people were treated at the scene and released.

The accident is still under investigation with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and it is unknown what caused the Honda to rear-end the Nissan, which caused the multiple vehicle accident.

Father and daughter hurt in parasailing accident

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported that a father and his 6-year-old daughter were injured on Monday when their parasail malfunctioned and bounced them across the water and into a sea wall.

Both father and daughter only suffered minor injuries.  ”They suffered only bumps and bruises.  Their injuries could have been much worse,” said FWC spokesman Jorge Pino.

The two went up in the parasail a little before 5 p.m. into the waters east of Miami’s Bayside Marketplace and were part of a family of six visiting from Chicago.   According to Pino, the parasail had troubles and went down, dragging the pair through the water, Pino said.  Apparently the boat’s tow rope broke.

“That’s when the gust of wind comes, grabs them and catapults them in the air,” Pino said,  ”all while dragging them, bouncing up and down on the water.”

The father and daughter hit a gust a wind that picked them up and they hit a sea wall and then finally another gust of wind that picked them up and dropped them onto the land.

The names of the two have not been released.  They were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated and authorities are trying to determine whether or not the tow rope snapped or if a person from the boat cut it.

The name of the parasailing company was not released.

Semi-truck carrying graham crackers spills and causes traffic jam

A tractor trailer overturned Thursday night on a Dallas freeway, spilling hundreds of boxes of graham crackers onto the roadway. It was a free for all as people flocked to a busy intersection on Friday morning scooping up boxes of graham crackers.   The semi-truck flipped in northbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Colorado Boulevard at about 7 p.m. according to reports.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

Police officers were overwhelmed trying to keep motorists from taking the hundreds of boxes of graham crackers from along the interstate.  The Honey Maid graham crackers were dispersed from the trailer when it overturned.

The graham cracker looters caused a traffic jam at 7:30.  The Sheriff’s department stated, “They were stopping, literally, 10 to 15 at a time, causing not only a traffic hazard, but people were crossing the highway here and could have gotten hit.”

Reports stated the driver of the semi truck was taken to a nearby hospital and his injuries had not been disclosed.  He was reportedly in stable condition.
