Skechers to Pay $40 Million to Settle False Advertisement Claims
WASHINGTON – The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced Wednesday May 16, 2012 that Skechers USA will pay $40 million to settle charges that the company misled consumers about the effectiveness of its Shape-ups toning shoes. Skechers claimed their toning shoes would “get you in shape without ever having to step foot in a gym,” however, many reputable medical and fitness organizations found this and many other of Skechers’ claims to be unfounded. The settlement is believed to be one of the largest ever involving consumer refunds. Reebok settled similar FTC charges over the company’s EasyTone toning shoes for $25 million last fall. ACE Study Findings The American Council on Exercise (ACE) enlisted a team of exercise scientists to put toning shoes to the test. After testing several brands of toning shoes, including Skechers Shape-ups, ACE found that across the board, there was simply no evidence to support that these shoes help wearers increase muscle strength or help burn more calories. In fact, ACEs Chief Science Officer believes that with extended wear, users could suffer serious gait and alignment issues.
